Malekula Island
Welcome to the stunning Malekula Island. Not for the faint-hearted, this wild island is bush-clad and mountainous, with plenty of waterfalls and rivers that cut through the landscape. Second, only to Santo in size, Malekula is the destination in Vanuatu to visit for an adventure.
Culturally and linguistically diverse, over thirty distinct dialects can be heard on the island. Filled with cultural significance and local pride, the island is home to some of Vanuatu’s best custom dances. The names given to the primary cultural groups are Small Nambas and Big Nambas.
For those looking to embrace the Ni-Vanuatu culture or Malekula cannibalism, it is second to none. If you’re intrigued by history, be sure to explore the ancient cannibal sites on the northern side of the island or stop by a local village. The villagers are exceptionally friendly and enjoy sharing their proud cultural heritage with visitors.
For those adventurers among us, try a Highland trek or visit any of the protected marine areas for a quick snorkel or dive. Don’t forget to bring the go-pro with you to capture a once-in-a-lifetime shot, as the trekking and snorkelling on Malekula are absolutely beautiful.
