Efate Island

Efate is the main island of Vanuatu. Efate Island is the location of Vanuatu's capital Port Vila and is the primary location for the majority of commerce and tourism activities take place.

The island has a rugged coastline and rolling verdant countryside, fast flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, isolated sandy bays and lagoons. The interior is verdant rain forest cut only by a few walking tracks to remote weather and radio beacons.

Havannah Harbour on the north side is a spectacular natural haven and consequently used during World War II as a naval rear base by the entire U.S. 7th Fleet. It is also the site of some extraordinary archaeological digs and gruesome discoveries. There are numerous types of accommodation scattered around Efate Island including many newly built and beautiful resorts.

The capital Port Vila is located around a magnificent natural harbour offering stunning views of Iririki, Ifira islands, and a look out all the way to Malapoa Point. Villa's waterfront area is a favourite among locals and tourists alike, with its ample supply of live corals and tropical fish. Villa is also fast becoming known as the gourmet capital of the South Pacific, with an amazing array of beautiful native Vanuatu cuisine and culinary treats.

The international airport is only a 10-minute drive from town and all major resorts and hotels.

Hire a car or take a bus or an aircraft around the island. There are also many cruise options available that offer day and overnight charters to the nearby islands of Hat, Pele, Moso, Nguna, Lelepa and Kakula Islands.
